In the 1960s, Lin Shen, an engineer for China's Third Front Construction, headed to the deep mountains of southwest China for援建. There, he met Su Wan, a substitute teacher who'd dedicated herself to the village's only primary school. No moonlit dates—their bond began with him fixing her classroom's leaky roof, and her bringing ginger tea simmered all night to the workers. When a mudslide destroyed the workers' shed, Lin Shen shielded Su Wan with his body; Su Wan led her students over two mountains to deliver life-saving rations to trapped workers. When Lin Shen got orders to transfer to a more dangerous tunnel project, Su Wan didn't beg him to stay—she just stuffed a hand-knitted sweater into his bag: "I'll wait at the school. Come back, and you'll teach the kids science." Thirty years later, the white-haired couple sat at the school gate they built together, watching high-speed trains race past the mountains. Smiling, they said: "Our love was never about romance. It was the days we survived together—longer and warmer than any sweet nothings."
