Lin Qingchuan, a hermit doctor from the deep mountains, went down the mountain to help people as ordered by his master. On the first day, he found Gu Chengyuan—the young master of the Gu family in the capital—who had fallen off a cliff due to an assassination attempt and was on the verge of death at the bottom of the cliff. He revived Gu with his祖传 silver needles and turned to leave, but Gu grabbed his衣角: "A thousand taels of gold as a thank-you gift." Lin shook his head and refused—he practiced medicine only to help others, never for rewards. But Gu clung to him: piling gold in the shabby yard, helping him fend off local ruffians, and even throwing himself in front of Lin to block a knife when the pursuers struck. Looking at the bleeding Gu, Lin realized that this young master "who wanted to give a thousand taels of gold" was not repaying a favor, but his heart... And the secrets behind the gold were just beginning to unfold.
