In the early 1990s, factory technician Lin Canyang falls for assembly line beauty Su Xiaoman during a cultural performance. As their romance blossoms, the state-owned enterprise restructuring wave hits. Forced to sell snacks at night markets after layoffs, Lin discovers the factory director's son is pursuing Su. At the crossroads of era transition and love choices, the two youths communicate through cassette tapes playing 'Love Ballad 1990', composing a poignant elegy for the post-80s generation.
