In the late 1980s, a hospital oversight swapped two baby girls—Lin Xiaoman, a city schoolteacher (born to a rural family), and Zhou Xiaotang, a rural breakfast seller (born to a city family). Two decades later, Xiaoman uncovers her true roots when checking her blood type for her ailing mother, leading her to Xiaotang’s small town. Xiaoman grapples between her non-biological yet devoted teacher parents and her biological but unfamiliar rural parents; Xiaotang faces the choice of “returning to the city to recognize her birth family” or “staying with her rural household”. As the two women struggle with their misplaced kinship, they also catch glimpses of “another life” in each other. Their partners—Xiaoman’s doctor boyfriend and Xiaotang’s farmer husband—stand by them warmly, guiding them to find answers about “love and belonging”.
