In 1988, fiery textile worker Su Xiaoman quits her state job after discovering her husband Zhou Qiang's gambling addiction. She dives into private enterprise by securing Southern clothing wholesale channels, only to face Zhou's mockery that 'women can't do business'. When her venture shows promise, Zhou steals her capital and loses it all, while a sneaky opponent frames her for smuggling. With a last loan from coworkers, Xiaoman fights back but encounters Zhou with his mistress at her night market stall. She publicly burns their marriage contract and stakes everything on a 'mysterious business opportunity' aboard a green train. Three months later, as Zhou faces loan sharks by the river, Xiaoman cuts the ribbon for her Neon Apparel Company. He kneels before reporters, begging her not to divorce him with a hand-painted sign.
