Ex-soldier Lin Jianguo returns to his small southern Zhejiang town in 1980. While others cling to stable factory jobs, he spots a lucrative business opportunity in a pile of discarded plastics. Mocked by neighbors as a layabout and targeted by local profiteers, he seizes the loosening policy wind to scale from flipping scarce goods to running a processing factory. He helps fellow villagers escape poverty and carves out his own prosperous path in the 1980s boom, unlocking the hidden wealth behind ordinary things.
