The day after Emperor Gu Zhao of Daqi ascended the throne, he received thirty memorials impeaching his imperial tutor Su Mu—over three years, Su Mu had spent three million taels from the imperial treasury on opera troupes, gilded boats, and even gold belts for gatekeepers, earning him the title “Daqi’s Top Prodigal.” When Gu Zhao summoned Su Mu to confront him, Su Mu pulled out a blood-stained account book: “The money for the opera troupe bought grain for the northwest army; the gilded boat hides the traitorous minister’s correspondence with enemies.” It turns out this “prodigal tutor” had long turned every tael into a hidden chess piece to protect the kingdom, and behind his dissolute facade was sixteen years of guardianship over the young emperor.
