Su Jianwei, a new jinshi, takes office as magistrate of Qingyang County. He squats on the street every day drinking two-copper porridge, earning the nickname "Porridge Magistrate" from mocking locals. Little do they know, his porridge bowl hides a plan—grain merchants collude with yamen runners to monopolize rice prices, even tripling the cost of the cheapest porridge, leaving the poor with only cold water to eat. Su uses "searching for authentic porridge" as a cover to collect evidence from every alley. When he finally takes down the corrupt group and opens a "People’s Porridge Shop," the figure squatting on the steps slurping porridge becomes the most reassuring "living Buddha" in Qingyang County.
