In 1990s China, young Chen Mo witnesses his father's death in a firecracker factory accident on New Year's Eve, developing a lifelong aversion to festive fireworks. Two decades later as an environmental lawyer, he uncovers the mayor's family's involvement in the tragedy. When his childhood sweetheart Lin Xia, the mayor's daughter, returns with an eco-friendly fireworks project, Chen must choose between vengeance and love, tradition and innovation.
