Lin Mo, a former son-in-law dumped by his wife for being good-for-nothing, returns to a poor mountain village with his lame father and blind mother amid a devastating famine. While villagers subsist on tree bark, he uses modern tricks—building a simple greenhouse for fast-growing vegetables and a small livestock pen—to keep his family well-fed with meat daily. The formerly scornful villagers are shocked, even his ex-wife who abandoned him is green with envy. Lin Mo not only rises to become the admired capable person but also finds a warm romantic connection in hardship, living a prosperous life.
