A poor scholar was wrongfully accused of cheating in the imperial examination and thrown into a death cell awaiting execution. In despair, he wrote *On the Six States* taught by his mentor, with every word sharply exposing the imperial court’s ills. The essay was secretly sent to the palace by a prison guard, astonishing all civil and military officials. Slamming the table in surprise, the emperor learned the author was the wrongfully imprisoned examinee. He immediately pardoned the scholar, appointed him the new top scholar and summoned him to the palace—kicking off a spectacular rise-from-adversity story.
