Su Wan, an ancient painting restorer, guards half of "The Gardenia Waiting for Return" left by her grandmother—in the painting, a woman wears a plump gardenia behind her ear, with the inscription "Waiting for the Returned". At a flea market, she meets Lin Shen, an antique dealer with the same dried gardenia on his collar. Collaborating to solve the painting's mystery, they uncover Grandma's past: she fell in love with A Lin, an opera actor who went missing in the war, and waited for him all her life under a gardenia tree. Lin Shen is A Lin's grandson, carrying the other half of the painting to find the "Returned". When the two paintings are joined, the fluorescent gardenia hidden in the layers suddenly "blooms," as if Grandma's wait finally echoed. Su Wan and Lin Shen fall in love during the process, realizing that the best inheritance is to bravely hold the love in front of you, carrying the regrets of the past.
