Lin Wan, an ancient book restorer, takes on the task of repairing the Song Dynasty handscroll *Smoky Willows*, only to find the client is Gu Zhao—her ex who disappeared five years ago. When she opens the scroll's夹层, their old token of love—a hair ribbon—and an unsent letter fall out: "My mom had late-stage stomach cancer. I didn't want you to suffer with me, so I left secretly." The "sudden departure" was a misunderstanding, but the longing Lin thought she'd buried comes rushing back—she never truly let him go. On the day the scroll is restored, Gu stands at her door with the jade hairpin he never gave her, his eyes red: "This time, can I turn your sorrow into a lifetime of togetherness?"
