Facing the collapse of her ancestral Jiangnan opera troupe, dying matriarch Caiyun adopts orphan Xiaohe. Ten years later, Xiaohe becomes a Shanghai star performer, unaware she's merely a replica of Caiyun's deceased daughter. When forced into a political marriage to save the troupe, Xiaohe stuns the wedding banquet by performing the very aria Caiyun used to poison her real child decades ago. The theatrical vengeance exposes a decades-long deception, proving sometimes life's most dramatic scenes unfold offstage – where the spectator is in fact the lead player of an ironic twist.
