Lin Xiao, who’s frustrated at work, moves into a rental apartment in the old town. Disturbed by noises every night, she sinks into a plight of “no light in the long night”. When a city-wide blackout hits one day, she’s trapped in darkness until a faint flashlight beams from upstairs—it’s Old Chen, the独居 (single) neighbor in the same building. At first on guard, Lin finds Old Chen always “happens to be there” when she’s in trouble: fixing pipes, sending hot soup. Until she accidentally learns Old Chen is her late father’s old colleague, who was entrusted by her dad to watch over her before he disappeared. Finally Lin realizes, those lights in long nights come from someone’s silent protection in the shadows.
