Clenching his teeth, he takes shortcuts, runs red lights, even drives onto a pedestrian street, yelling “The kid needs help!” Strangers—delivery workers, square dancers—form a human corridor to clear his way. When Xiao Man is wheeled into the ER, Lao Zhou collapses in the hallway, and his phone pings with his late daughter’s voice: “Dad, help someone next time.”
