She tries desperately to stop her mother from going to the disaster area as a volunteer, but in the argument, she discovers the reason for her mother's persistence—her father had gone into exile for saving someone, and her mother had spent the rest of her life searching for the child he saved. As memories overlap with reality, Lin Xiaoyu struggles between preventing the disaster and respecting her mother's beliefs, eventually choosing to board the train to Wenchuan with her mother. During the aftershock, her mother protects the orphan she saved with her body and finally reveals before her death that Lin Xiaoyu was the child saved back then. In the morning light on the ruins, Lin Xiaoyu holds her mother's hand and understands that some loves are destined to cross time for redemption, and the summer of 2008 is both a farewell and a new beginning.
