In 1985, discharged soldier Zhao Lei returns to his hometown in Northeast China, planning to take over his late father's state-run repair shop. Inside his father's old toolbox, he finds hidden clues: a stained food coupon, half a Peking opera ticket and a yellowed IOU. As he digs into the mystery behind his father's sudden death years ago, he clashes with his childhood friend—now an official at the local industrial and commercial bureau—over the shop's ownership. As they dig deeper, the dusty secrets of the small town surface, and the two men also find themselves tangled in a shared youthful crush on a local girl, unfolding against the backdrop of China's early reform era.
