During the restructuring of an old state-owned machinery factory in Northeast China, two co-workers Liu Guixiang and Zhao Jianguo, who have worked together for 30 years, face a huge fate twist. Guixiang gets her layoff notice, while Zhao, once clumsy in tech and often chided by Guixiang, becomes the new team leader and gets a pay rise after volunteering to learn new CNC skills. When they meet in the workshop tool room, Guixiang glares angrily, and Zhao hesitates holding his pay slip—he secretly got an invitation for Guixiang to a debugging position at the new factory. The line "You're laid off, I get a raise" was his clumsy attempt to help his buddy, turning into the warmest twist in the minus 30°C Northeast wind.
