In a state-owned construction site in the 1990s, hundreds of workers fall mysteriously ill one after another, on the verge of death. The seemingly ordinary eight-yuan lunchbox conceals a sinister plot where the contractor colludes with suppliers to make illegal profits by harming people. A poor replacement worker gets involved accidentally and gradually develops affection with the hot-tempered, righteous daughter of the site foreman.
