"Bao Niang" follows Lin Baoniang, a full-time housewife who dedicated a decade to her husband Chen Mo and mother-in-law, only to face her husband's affair with his secretary, her mother-in-law's insults of being a "freeloader," and eventually being kicked out. Desperate, she finds her late mother's old trunk—inside are the unfinished cheongsam manuscripts of her mother's "Bao Niang" dream. Baoniang starts selling hand-sewn cheongsams at a stall, winning customers with the warmth in every stitch, and gradually builds a popular cheongsam studio. When Chen Mo loses his job over the affair and his mother-in-law begs for help with a serious illness, Baoniang stands by her studio's floor-to-ceiling window and smiles: "I'm no longer someone's附属品 (appendage). I'm Bao Niang, someone who can hold up her own sky."
