Lin Wan, a modern emergency doctor, dies from overwork and is reborn as Zhou Xiaowan—a "jinx" village girl in a 1969 mountain village in northwest Shanxi who just got rejected by her fiancé. In her previous life, she regretted never seeing her grandfather before his death; now, she finds her grandfather is the "old doctor" being criticized in the village. To protect him and make up for her guilt over rural medical neglect, she becomes a barefoot doctor using modern knowledge: she saves a village woman with postpartum eclampsia (mistaken for "possession") via acupuncture, cures a feverish child with alcohol disinfection and penicillin, but is targeted by Wang Dazhu, the village doctor, who calls her "using sorcery to harm people". Worse still, Chen Mo, an educated youth, notices she's "not an ordinary village girl", and they go from testing each other to facing troubles together. Just when Lin Wan thinks she can change her grandfather's fate, she discovers a shocking secret about her own identity hidden by him...
