In a small county in the late 1980s, Chuncao, a widow, struggles to raise her 5-year-old daughter Xiaokui. Her mother-in-law calls her a "jinx who killed her husband," and neighbors gossip about her "immorality." She sells goods at a stall and works as a nanny, saving every penny for Xiaokui's tuition. Until one day, her ex-husband—who vanished three years ago—returns with his wealthy new wife to snatch the child. When hiding Xiaokui, Chuncao finds her late husband's diary and uncovers the truth about his "accidental death": Her mother-in-law knew her son was having an affair all along but blamed everything on Chuncao! Can Chuncao keep her daughter, and can she reconcile with the past that hurt her so deeply?
