In the 1990s, at a steel factory staff compound in Northeast China, Lin Xiaomei, a tough woman, took over a shabby restaurant to run "Xiaomei's Iron Wok Stew" to earn tuition for her brother. She crossed paths with Zhou Jianguo, the "steel factory tough guy" just back from the army—he called her "indecent for a woman to show up in public," but secretly fixed her leaky roof later.
