A Ruan, a spirit trapped in an ancient painting, has guarded the scroll for 300 years until she meets Lu Zhao, a scholar heading to the capital for the imperial exam—he is the only one who can see her and even willing to trade half his soul to bring her into the mortal world. But the secret of the painting spirit’s manifestation is discovered by the national prelate, who wants to extract her soul to make a longevity pill; Lu Zhao is also imprisoned for "being entangled by evil spirits" and his family is raided. To save her lover, A Ruan swallows a reversal pill given by a fallen immortal, using the millennium spiritual power from the painting to shatter the prelate’s formation—only to find out she is a fragment of a former princess’s soul. When the scroll cracks and memories return, she is determined to reclaim what belongs to her and stand with Lu Zhao in the sunlight—this time, no longer being the "wife" hidden in the painting, but his bold and open sweetheart.
