Lin Xiaoman, a female journalist, returns to her hometown to investigate the rural legend of "the evil spirit of Qingniu Mountain claiming lives". She accidentally meets Zhou Qiang, a villager searching for his missing brother, and Chen Mo, a criminal policeman tracking a ten-year-old mine disaster cold case. The three team up to venture into the fog-shrouded barren mountain, where they encounter supernatural events: baby cries at night, familiar names suddenly appearing on tombstones, and altered village records. As they close in on the truth of the "evil spirit", they realize the most terrifying thing is never the ghost—during the mine disaster years ago, villagers killed survivors to embezzle compensation and used superstition to create the "evil spirit" legend to cover their crimes; the so-called "claiming lives" is just revenge from the victims' families. To Lin's devastation, her father is the mastermind behind the mine disaster, forcing her to choose between truth and family.
