In a southern town in the 1990s, Lin Xiaoman, a rural girl, comes to the city to work in a state-owned garment factory to earn her brother's tuition. She offends the snobbish team leader for standing up for a bullied colleague, but catches the eye of Chen Mo, an engineer here to discuss technical transformation—this man, often called "impractical," is secretly developing new equipment to save the factory. From "rivals" to "comrades": Xiaoman uses her six-month savings to fill Chen Mo's R&D gap, while Chen Mo secretly enrolls her in night school to study design. When Chen Mo's equipment doubles the factory's orders and Xiaoman's original designs hit the local fashion show, two "underdogs" achieve both career and love success in the fiery wave of reform and opening up.
