In a small Northeast Chinese village in 1990, Lin Xiaotang was kicked out by her husband’s family for “infertility,” taking only two mu of poor farmland and her mother’s pickle recipe. Starting with a village-entrance stall selling pickles, she met Chen Mo, a former educated youth who helped her break into the county market.
