Lin Chuan, a Beijing drifter, gets laid off at the end of the year—rent due, wallet empty, not even enough for a train ticket home. Worse, he fears his snobby relatives who look down on him for being poor. Crouching outside a convenience store at midnight, munching on a cold bun, his phone pops up with the "Warm Winter Zero-Cost Purchase System": complete tasks of "helping strangers fulfill small wishes" to redeem items. Starting with helping a vegetable vendor and making a nest for strays, he earns a ticket and even helps his ex-girlfriend's grandmother (who once despised him). When he returns home with New Year goods, his relatives switch from sneering to fawning—only to learn the system hides his late mother's secret: it's not "zero-cost", but a "road home" paved with her love.
