Lin Xiaoman, a rural girl raised by her mother who sold a wutong tree for her tuition, endures刁难 from her mother-in-law and cold violence from her husband after marriage—her mother-in-law wants to cut the tree for a garage, and her husband helps his family steal her landscape design works. When her mother hugs the tree and sobs, "This is the root I gave you," Lin finally awakens: She reclaims her copyright with her talent, turns the wutong tree into an urban intangible cultural heritage landmark, slapping the snobbish in-laws and making her mother's "root" her strongest backbone.
