Lin Shen, a down-and-out modern screenwriter, wakes up as the "imperially gifted plaything" of Murong Qing, Empress of Dayan—a "male favorite" forced on her by the Empress Dowager to humiliate her. The Empress treats him with icy disdain, but accidentally discovers that the street storybooks he writes hold clever solutions to court crises: salt tax fraud, feudal lords' rebellion. Lin Shen also realizes the seemingly ruthless Empress has been alone, bearing the pressure of a crumbling dynasty under the Dowager's oppression. From "mutual manipulation" to "mutual devotion", Lin uses his screenwriting ingenuity to help the Empress expose power traps, while the Empress uses her authority to shield him from danger. When the Dowager's blade targets the Empress and feudal lords' armies surround the capital, they finally understand—the most touching "script" is never made up, but the real bond growing between two hearts.
