In the 1980s, Taohua Village in northern China is struck by a "dog calamity": livestock are killed one after another, and an elderly villager is attacked and falls comatose at night. Old hunter Zhou Fugen insists it's revenge from the "spirit dog" killed by the village ten years ago—he shot his eight-year companion Old Yellow himself, and now he's haunted by dog barks every night. Veterinarian Lin Xiaoman, who just returned to the village, finds the dead dogs carry a rare virus. As the calamity worsens, Village Chief Wang Dagui proposes "selling land to escape disaster," claiming "the spirit dog's anger is too strong." Tracing the virus, Lin catches Wang colluding with a businessman at a county dog farm—they're using sick dogs to create panic and buy the village's land cheaply! When Zhou Fugen raises his shotgun to "subdue the spirit dog," Lin rushes over and sees a bony yellow dog in front of her—with the copper bell Zhou tied to Old Yellow ten years ago! It turns out Lin's father saved Old Yellow, and now it's back to protect the villagers...
