30-year-old Xu Wangui returns to the Eighteen Bends Village (which she hasn’t visited for a decade) when her mother is critically ill. She learns the truth—she was given away to raise money for her younger brother’s surgery. While caring for her dying mother, she tries to bridge the gap with her stubborn father and unfamiliar brother, as village gossip stabs her like needles. Until she finds her mother’s 20-year-old diary, filled with unspoken guilt and longing. Torn between hatred and love, Xu finally understands home is never a straight road, but a bond that twists through eighteen bends. Those unsaid “I’m sorry”s eventually piece together into “I love you” in the end.
