Ye Qingyao, a neglected concubine’s daughter of the Prime Minister’s Mansion, was raised as her elder sister’s "living substitute" since childhood. She is forced to marry the sickly Crown Prince Xiao Jingheng as a stand-in bride to ward off misfortune for her sister. Expecting to live as a shadow in the deep palace forever, she discovers the "dying prince" is actually a scheming genius feigning weakness—he uses her to disrupt the Prime Minister’s plots while secretly shielding her from the Empress’s poisoned wine and concubines’ schemes. When Ye Qingyao uncovers she is the orphan of the former dynasty’s princess, and learns Xiao Jingheng’s "rebellion" plan is inextricably linked to her origin, will they continue mutual exploitation or break the substitute’s chains to overthrow the corrupt imperial power together? In the palace, the shadow strives to be her own light, and the "sick prince" vows to guard his kingdom. A counterattack power struggle woven with the "substitute" game begins.
