Chen Aniu, son of a butcher, was mocked as a "crude oaf" since childhood. But his dream of taking the imperial exam began when he saved Su Wan, daughter of a disgraced Hanlin scholar—she squatted by his meat stall, teaching him to write the character "人" (human), saying, "A butcher's son can also be a top scholar." However, Su Wan's noble family despised him as unworthy, examiners took bribes from his rivals to destroy his papers, and when Su Wan was framed for treason, Aniu was blocked outside her mansion, forbidden to see her. What's more, Su Wan always had a cute, doll-like little nephew who tugged Aniu's衣角 and called him "brother-in-law" daily—their secret code for meetings. When Aniu stood before the woodshed where Su Wan was imprisoned, holding the top scholar list, he raised the paper with "人" written by Su Wan: "I want to be a top scholar, but more importantly, I want to 'snatch' you back from everyone's prejudice."
