During the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty, Madam Wa, nearly 60, saw the court’s futile fight against Wokou and coastal people massacred. She led the Zhuang wolf soldiers to volunteer for the war despite family objections. She had to refute the court’s doubt that "women leading troops would bring chaos", break the Wokou’s trap of "luring soldiers to slaughter villages", and protect her grandson from random arrows.
