Socially anxious Taoist Lu Qingya goes down the mountain to practice, accidentally awakening Zhao, a thousand-year-old female Bà—an ancient mythical beast with antlers who spews fire when excited, and insists on sticking to him as a "personal bodyguard." To hide Zhao's identity, Lu pretends to be a "loner with a pet," but gets involved in a series of urban missing persons cases: all victims bear the "Burning Curse," with clues pointing to an evil cultivator collecting female Bà's power. While helping the police solve cases, he must also protect Zhao from the cultivator. Lu struggles daily between "covering Zhao's antlers" and "sealing her fire-spewing mouth" with talismans.
