Lin Chuan, a modern food inspector, travels back in time to become a penniless scholar in ancient China. He's publicly dumped by his fiancée, who mocks him for "never being able to afford sugar" since he can't even pay the imperial exam fee. That night, Su Wantang—the city's most mysterious sugar tycoon—shows up with a dowry, proposing marriage on one condition: help her find the mastermind sabotaging her sugar shops. Using his modern food expertise, Lin uncovers scams like adulterated sugar and moldy storage, reviving Su's business. In return, Su secretly funds his exam prep. What starts as a transactional marriage slowly blooms into love. When Lin returns as the top scholar, he humiliates his ex-fiancée and exposes Su's uncles as the culprits. In the end, the top scholar and the sugar tycoon expand "Wantang Sugar" nationwide, turning their feelings into the sweetest happily-ever-after.
