Lin Zhao, the new Zhuangyuan (top scholar) of the Daning Dynasty, is the son of Lin Shi, a disgraced minister's daughter framed for "colluding with enemies" a decade ago. His mother hid his identity to protect him but was wrongfully killed by the prefect, leaving him half a peony-embroidered silk handkerchief on her deathbed. Now a Zhuangyuan, Lin faces Gu Yan—the prime minister and mastermind of his mother's death—who unexpectedly tries to marry his daughter to Lin. Pretending to comply, Lin searches the Gu mansion for evidence while getting help from an old diviner (a friend of his mother's who can read past lives). He uncovers the truth: Gu Yan framed Lin Shi to steal the Lin family's border defense map, and even the prefect was his pawn. When Lin finds the complete map and Gu's handwritten letter, Gu falsely accuses him of "treason."
