Hu Yiba (Hu Jiarong), a royal spy demoted to a seventh-rank magistrate, arrives in Ping'an County with a "slack-off" mission, only to meet Du Jiangshan, an upright and iron-willed constable. One is slippery and crafty, the other rigid—they fight immediately over "stealing official wine" but are forced to team up to investigate a series of disappearances: all victims are commoners who offended local gentry, with clues pointing to the royal tribute bureau! When the slippery magistrate's "crooked tricks" collide with the constable's "fist of justice", can they tear off the gentry's power mask? And will Hu Yiba's hidden "royal mission" completely break their bond?
