Zhang Dashan, a hunter in the deep mountains of Northeast China, stumbles into the timber business after saving a southern businessman being chased for debts. Amid villagers' doubts of "ruining a stable life", competitors sabotaging his supply, and even his childhood sweetheart Xiuqin breaking up with him for being too busy, he uses his "hunter's tricks"—judging wood moisture by mountain climate—to solve clients' problems. He also leads the village to grow fruit trees for eco-tourism. When he finally becomes the county's richest man, he sees Xiuqin holding his old shotgun in the audience. It turns out she never blamed him; she just secretly guarded his original intention of "rooted in the mountains".
