Set in a 1990s coal mining town in Northeast China, the story follows Wang Dazhu, a kind-hearted young man who has long been treated as a doormat by his friends and relatives. He once covered for his cousin at work, only to lose his formal job and all the betrothal money he saved for his wedding. After this heavy loss, Dazhu decides to stand up for himself. Using the straightforward, bold manner typical of Northeast locals, he fends off greedy folks and makes hilarious blunders along the way, finally gaining his own dignity and true love.
