In 1985, at an old alley in Northeast China, Li Tiedan guarded his father's grilled kidney stall to save money for his childhood sweetheart's dowry—until Zhou Xiaotang, a girl from the south, showed up with a modified tricycle selling "sweet-spicy garlic kidneys" and stole all his regulars. They bickered daily: Tiedan hated her for "ruining the old flavor," Xiaotang mocked him for "being a stubborn antique." But when Xiaotang was harassed by hooligans, Tiedan rushed over with his grill; when Tiedan was chased by urban management, Xiaotang used her southern flexibility to get him a license. One late night, squatting and eating kidneys, Xiaotang suddenly said, "I came to find my family." Tiedan then realized—beneath her fashionable dress was the same heart as his: guarding the taste of "home."
