Zhang Tiezhu, a young man from a Northeast Chinese village, heads to the city for odd jobs to fulfill his grandma's wish of a lively New Year—only to be cheated out of his wages, left penniless for New Year supplies. When desperate, he triggers the "New Year Vibe Guardian System": complete "principle-first" tasks to earn "New Year Value" for goods. Tasks range from fixing a neighbor's drafty heater, delivering frozen pear sets to lonely elders, to watching a candied hawker's stall (and dealing with candy-stealing kids)—all "thankless" jobs. Tiezhu persists, winning neighbors' approval and falling for Xiao Shuang, a straightforward frozen pear seller.
