In the industrial city of Northeast China in 1980, Lin Weidong, a young technician at a state-owned textile mill, lives a routine life and secretly admires Zhao Xiaomei, a female coworker next door. Suddenly, his long-lost childhood friend Gangzi returns with a large sum of money and a suspicious secret, involving illegal transactions between state-owned enterprises and self-employed individuals back then. Lin is unexpectedly drawn into the turmoil, having to protect his crush Xiaomei while uncovering Gangzi’s secret and facing confusion and choices brought by the era’s changes, a past story full of love and hate thus unfolds.
