When his beloved mentor falls critically ill, Wei Lin, a poor young scholar, rushes back to the capital with three million taels he's scraped together. Planning only to fetch medicine to save his mentor, he's immediately drawn into court intrigues: his mentor is linked to a decade-old treason case, and the ambitious Crown Prince wants to eliminate Wei Lin using this as a pretext. Refusing to cling to the powerful Crown Prince or be a puppet, Wei Lin uses the three million taels as capital, outwits all rivals with his sharp wits, and rises from a lowly clerk to the top of the bureaucracy, becoming Grand Secretary. He saves his mentor and proves he holds all the cards in every game he plays.
