In 1990, in the Fuxing Li alley of Shanghai, Su Xiaotang runs 'Jinxiu Fang' making traditional qipaos, on the brink of desperation to raise money for her mother's medical bills. Her childhood friend Lu Yuan returns from Shenzhen with a blueprint for a 'Shanghai-style fashion brand' and wants to take over the shop to partner. They clash fiercely over 'preserving the old' vs 'innovating', but when searching through her mother's relics, they find a diary with a boat ticket—revealing her mother once gave up the chance to study design in Hong Kong for Lu Yuan's father.
