Su Yuci, the top Kunqu opera actress at Phoenix Terrace—the capital's most renowned opera house—has waited three years for Gu Zhao, a border general, clinging to their engagement jade as a token of their promise. Yet what she receives is news of Gu's "death" and a threat from the powerful Lord Zhao, who forces her to become his concubine. Just as she raises the jade to shatter it and end her life, Gu Zhao appears alive—only to hold betrothal gifts for Lord Zhao's daughter and claim he will "marry" into the Zhao family. In their struggle, the jade breaks, revealing a bloodstained letter from Gu: he's pretending to submit to Lord Zhao to investigate his crime of colluding with enemies. Caught between the truth of her lover's "betrayal" and the impending danger of exposure, Su Yuci must stage a more fiery "life-and-death drama" on Phoenix Terrace than *The Peony Pavilion*.
