In 1930s Shanghai, famous opera singer Su Wanqing had a sweet romance with newspaper reporter Shen Yanqiu. But Shen left without a word to go to Europe to curry favor with the powerful when his family fell on hard times, leaving Su alone to run the opera troupe. Ten years later, Shen, now a wealthy businessman from Southeast Asia, returns to Shanghai.
