In the Republic of China, Su Wan, the top actress of an opera troupe, saved Gu Yanzhao, a warlord's son, who was severely wounded one night. The lyrics of *The Peony Pavilion*—“beautiful scenery on a wonderful day”—became their love token. But Gu’s father, who deemed opera singers “disgraceful,” tore them apart and forged evidence of Su’s “affair” with a merchant to send to the front. When Gu returned from the battlefield, all he found was Su’s body hanging in the opera house and a blood-stained note in her hand: “I waited for you with our opera promise, never betrayed.” In the empty theater, only the melody of *The Peony Pavilion* lingered, while their “wonderful day” had long turned into nothingness.
